Installed as a part of the annual Sculpture IS: 2022 exhibit at Sierra Azul Gardens, four fennel inspired Umbel flowers were planted in the garden and silhouetted against the sky. They were inspired by a curiosity about identifying edible plants, starting to recognize plants in the wild as food, made me see plants in a new way. Fennels are one of the most recognized edibles that grow in California; the seeds and fronds are tasty and available for the taking, yet there is a tendency to not trust the wild plants and still buy these packaged from a store. These pieces talk about the disconnect we have with nature and the influence of agriculture on the health of the planet.
