Week four of my residency at Buffalo Creek Art Center

This is my fourth and final week here on the ranch and it’s bittersweet to be leaving for sure.

Week four of my residency at Buffalo Creek Art Center | the dirt | Jenni Ward ceramic sculpture

This week, the dream team of artists and art wranglers were treated to a bbq dinner on Lake Tahoe, enjoying good food, good company and an excellent sunset. Back in the studio, I created nine bone spheres encased in terracotta shells, they were a little bit of an experiment and I lost 3 in the firing but there is definitely some potential with those guys that I’m very excited about! I also finished assembling all the parts of my newest porcelain and terracotta Bone Series inspired pieces, photographed them, sold one and got the rest up in the online shop.

Today, I started packing things up and prepping myself for the journey back in normal life again and while it will probably take awhile to absorb it all, right now, I just have so much gratitude to Steve, Lana, Mel, Bill, Harry & Austen for making this a fantastic experience and especially for my husband Nate who’s been holding down the fort back home this whole time.

Just a reminder that I’m still taking donations to help fund my residency in Iceland! I’m so grateful for everyone who has donated so far and put me over the halfway point to my goal of $2500!!! If you still want to contribute, please click the link:

Above is a sampling of what I’ve been able to create in four weeks at my current Artist-in-Residence program at Buffalo Creek Art Center– even I can’t wait to see what will happen in Iceland! Also, I’ll be sending out surprise thank yous to all who donate after I return from Iceland! It takes a village to raise an artist, thanks for your support!

New Video: Quaking Aspen Leaves

A little glimpse into my translucent porcelain aspen leaves installed in a tree on the property of Buffalo Creek Art Center in the oldest aspen grove in Nevada. In a wind storm, a few of the trees fell into a natural creek and I loved the way the water beaded up and fluttered the fallen leaves, so I had the porcelain ones follow the same journey.

Week Three of my Residency at Buffalo Creek Art Center

My third week at Buffalo Creek gave me my best results yet! I learned a lot in the previous two weeks and the kiln loads of those experiments but ultimately I ended up tossing most of that work. Using what I learned from those failures, I created another batch of the thin flanged porcelain forms and I also experimented with making the same forms but in terracotta (another clay I don’t use often!). Nearly all of these pieces came out of the kiln unscathed – yay! – success!

I also installed a piece from the Umbel Series on the grounds as a part of the permanent sculpture collection. These pieces are soooo tedious to make, every tiny wire is cut and placed and dipped in clay to create the tips of each of the flowers. I swore I would never make more of these flowers but the whole point of a residency is having the time to just make. And so I did. You can see more images of this piece here.

Oh! And as the field trip for the week, we got to tour the Cress Kiln Manufacturing facility which is based just up the road in Carson City… it was pretty cool to see the process of the kilns being made and assembled.

Only one more week to go before I head back into my real life… lots to finish up here and I definitely need to climb another mountain before I go!
